Holiday Plumbing Problems in Denton: Tips From a Master Plumber

By Kenneth Brown | Texas Master Plumber | Brown & Sons Plumbing

As the holidays approach, kitchens across Denton will be busier than usual. Between Thanksgiving meals, family gatherings, and Christmas cooking, household plumbing systems can experience more use than normal.

After more than 30 years working in the plumbing industry, I’ve seen how everyday habits can lead to expensive and inconvenient plumbing problems.

Two things I encourage homeowners to think about this time of year are preventing kitchen drain backups and preparing their plumbing for colder North Texas weather.

A Real Plumbing Problem: Eggshells Jammed a Garbage Disposal and the Dishwasher Backed Up

Garbage disposal and kitchen drain piping from a real service call involving eggshells and a dishwasher backup.

On a recent residential plumbing service call, I encountered a jammed garbage disposal containing a large amount of eggshells.

The homeowner was also experiencing a dishwasher backup.

Many homeowners don’t realize that dishwashers commonly discharge wastewater through a connection to the garbage disposal. When the disposal or connected drain system becomes obstructed, dishwasher wastewater may have nowhere to go and can back up into the kitchen sink.

This is a good example of how something as simple as putting too many eggshells through a garbage disposal can contribute to a much larger kitchen plumbing problem.

My advice: Don’t treat your garbage disposal like a trash can. Scrape eggshells, bones, large quantities of vegetable scraps, and other food waste into the trash before rinsing dishes.

If your dishwasher starts backing up, stop using it until the cause is identified. A jammed disposal is one possible cause, but the dishwasher drain hose or connected drain line can also become obstructed.

Why Holiday Cooking Can Lead to Clogged Kitchen Drains

Thanksgiving and Christmas meals often produce large quantities of cooking grease, turkey drippings, food scraps, and leftovers.

Pouring grease down the sink is one of the habits I recommend avoiding.

As grease cools, it can accumulate along the inside of drainpipes and trap other debris. Over time, these deposits may restrict drainage and contribute to a blockage.

Even running hot water afterward doesn’t guarantee that grease will make it safely through the plumbing system.

Instead, collect cooking grease in a container for proper disposal and scrape food scraps into the trash.

Watch for These Warning Signs Before Holiday Guests Arrive

A slow-draining kitchen sink can be an early indication of a developing blockage.

Other signs include gurgling noises, standing water, recurring drain odors, or dishwasher wastewater backing up into the sink.

If you’re already experiencing these problems, scheduling professional drain cleaning before a major family gathering can help you avoid an inconvenient plumbing emergency.

Don’t Forget About North Texas Cold Weather

While holiday drain problems are common concerns, Denton homeowners should also prepare for freezing temperatures.

North Texas weather can change quickly, and outdoor faucets or exposed water piping may be vulnerable during hard freezes.

I recommend disconnecting garden hoses, protecting outdoor faucets, checking exposed piping in unheated spaces, and knowing where your home’s main water shutoff valve is located.

Preparing your plumbing before freezing temperatures arrive is much easier than dealing with a burst pipe, water damage, and costly water line repairs.

If a frozen pipe bursts or a major water leak occurs during the holidays, shut off your main water supply immediately if it’s safe to do so. Brown & Sons Plumbing provides 24-hour emergency plumbing in Denton, TX, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
